Getting Back on the Mat



Life gets rough sometimes and before you know it, it's been an overwhelming few months before you found some time for yourself. For some it's a little easier to hop back into it but I think we should also acknowledge that it can be a real struggle when we've been away for really long. Hopefully some of these suggestions below would help you.


1. Reconnect to Your Intention Again

It can be for you to find more focus, to find stillness among the chaos, or even to just spend time with yourself. This also reminds me of how one of my students told me that her practice has helped her to be better person, partner and parent.


2. Set a Realistic Schedule

Instead of signing up for 7 classes a week, have a steady pace of one class a week and work it up to 2 or more if time and financials permit. If you're a stay at home mum and don't have the capacity to leave your child at home, explore online videos.


3. Let Go of Expectations

Be okay when things feel a little more challenging when you've been away for a while. Let go of the need to do things that you used to be able to do. That headstand can wait, or even be removed from your practice if it's no longer something that's feasible. There will always be options and alternatives.


4. Have an Accountability Buddy

Being in a class where everyone knows each other can be intimidating. Have a friend that checks in to class with you, pre-book your classes, set up reminders and show up knowing that on days when you're tired, you're always allowed to take breaks during the class without being judged.


Lastly, don't forget to give yourself a pat on the back for showing up, even when you have to take a child's pose 30mins into the class. Always remember that the practice is ultimately yours.
